Art is not only defined by the way it looks, but also by the
process of its creation. It is
this process that has attracted and committed me to pottery. With
each pot there is the initial prepping, throwing, drying, trimming, bisque
firing, glazing, and finally high firing of the clay. When I work with clay in series there is a unique
opportunity to explore shapes within a form by varying executions and focusing
on the intricacies of my work.
Ultimately, each stage, each
series, each execution, and each piece help to represent my own development as
an artist, and hopefully the aesthetics of each functional piece evoke the
emotions from which it was created.
Clay has been a part of my life for ten years now. My love for clay started in high school with throwing pots and over the years it has grown into being a part of my every day life. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at St. John’s University. After college I continued my learning through apprenticeships. I first apprenticed at the Saint John’s Pottery Studio under Richard Bresnahan, studying ceramics and wood firing. My second apprenticeship under Paul Krueger, I studied the use of rattan and leather. Now I incorporate rattan with my ceramics. I am currently making functional pottery at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis MN.
